How does the radiosurgical method of CyberKnife G4 work?


Radiosurgical method of cancer treatment with the help of system CyberKnife G4 with the use of robotic arm with 6 levels of freedom provides the possibility for the CyberKnife G4 to have the access to those tumors which earlier seemed hard-to-reach for the traditional surgery. Thus, there occurs the decrease of surrounding tissues injury (less damage to the critical structures). The use of these unique technologies in the cancer treatment process permit the system CyberKnife G4 to reach the error of less than 0.4 mm during the beam delivering onto the tumor.

System CyberKnife G4 is the new approach in the stereotactic radiosurgery. In general, stereotactic radiosurgery is not a surgical treatment. Though its name may conjure the image of scalpel and surgical intervention itself, the CyberKnife G4 treatment itself includes no incisions. Indeed, CyberKnife system is the first and the only robotic radiosurgical system in the world. This system is designed for non-invasive treatment of tumors throughout the whole body. It gives the pain-free non-surgical alternative for those patients who have inoperable tumors or tumors regarded as surgically difficult, or for those patients who are in search of alternative to surgery and chemotherapy.

Unlike operation, stereotactic radiosurgery (including CyberKnife G4) destroys cancer cells and stops the tumor raise without its elimination. Some of the stereotactic radiosurgery methods, such as GammaKnife for tumors of brain, require the head clip inside the stereotactic frame made under anesthesia to have the patient’s head unmoved during treatment.
Innovative technology CyberKnife G4 proposes new benefits of the stereotactic radiosurgery and does not require the patient’s head frame, and during the treatment process it uses the robotic arm with 6 levels of freedom which allows to synchronize the movements of CyberKnife system even with respiratory process, and everything is performed with unprecedented sub-millimeter accuracy which allows to deliver beams onto the tumor to destroy cancer cells.

Specialists radiologists, oncologists and medical physics use the CyberKnife G4 planning system to detect the unique shape, size and placement of the tumor, and to detect tissues and structure of organs which should be protected. The result of such a work in the CyberKnife planning system is personal individual treatment plan for each patient. This plan defines what radiation should be used and which radiation beams would be delivered onto the tumor.

During whole treatment the scanning cameras [1] automatically detect the tumor placement, while the system automatically corrects and defines each tumor movement during breathing or each patient’s movement during treatment process. While the procedure patient comfortably lies on the robotic coach, when the CyberKnife G4 itself (computerized robotic manipulator) [2] moves around the patient, delivering the convergent radiation beams at different angles and from various positions right onto the tumor. CyberKnife G4 system uses highly energetic linear accelerator [3], installed on the robotic arm with 5 levels of freedom, allowing to destroy cancer cells from more than 1800 positions.

CyberKnife G4 system uses the robotic arm with 6 level of freedom, which allows to synchronize the CyberKnife G4 system movements even with the respiratory process of a patient with the sub-millimeter accuracy (less than 0.4 mm), which permits to deliver beams onto the tumor to destroy the cancer cells.
